The overall progress and human development in any society cannot be uniform and consistent if this group of children, the slow learners, is neglected. They have an equal right to avail the opportunities for education and training to the optimum according to their individual abilities. Thus, they need a programme through which they can be assessed and provided appropriate educational training.

Kishalaya Institute for Slow Learners was born in 1999. It is the only school of its kind in North Kolkata to provide the requisite facilities and a comprehensive, individually tailored programme using modern and practical methods to teach and train these children to help face the challenges of daily life and work. Well qualified faculty imparts knowledge of the 3Rs and the curriculum comprises of vocational training and extra¬curricular activities.The school started with five children and the number has gradually increased.

The school is registered with the Office of the Commissioner for Persons with Disability, Government of West Bengal. It is managed by a governing body under a registered trust, GynodayaNidhi. Kishalaya Institute does not refuse admission to any deserving child, even if he or she is unable to pay the fee. Some kind-hearted people also sponsor students who cannot afford the expense of their education. Kishlaya has over the last 14 years of its existence acquired a name for itself.
