Who is a slow learner?

Unfortunately, human beings are not all born with the same advantages and abilities. Some are more capable than others. Slow learners belong to a special category of children who are born with pronounced learning disability due to inherited or congenital causes or even due to defective motor development, hearing or visual impairment. Learning disability can arise in a child due to dyslexia, Down's syndrome, ADHD, dyspraxia (problem in motor functioning). Children with learning disability are classified as slow learners.Slow learners find it difficult to learn in the conventional manner. They need a personalised training programme designed to equip them to deal with day-to-day demands of life. Such an education-cum-training programme is powered to motivate and help them to develop their limited abilities to the fullest extent. In other words, slow learners have difficulty in acquiring basic skills or in comprehending. Learning is to gain knowledge or understanding of skill by study, instruction or experience.

A child with learning disability may be quite successful in math computation or audio comprehension, but has difficulty in expressing his/her thoughts in writing or has on or more difficulty in academic areas. In the majority of cases, learning disability can be successfully mitigated to a great degree by one or more of the following pro¬active psychotherapy:

  • Through proper guidance and instructions whereby students can be taught alternative ways to overcome the difficulties faced by them
  • Through structured education, personalised training provided to children so as to enable them to acquire fundamental reading, writing and math skills
  • Through application of effective methods for task breakdown
  • By consistently rewarding every learning step and thereby motivate them
  • By drawing up and monitoring a holistic education-cum-training schedule for the child in consultation with his/her family/guardian

For such an educational programme to succeed, it is essential to first determine the individual's specific needs and then design an individualised programme for him or her, but only after fully understanding the background and possible causes(s) for his or her condition. Only then can a proper structured educational training programme be devised for the individual, such that would provide optimal chances to cover his or her needs. The programme would also provide life-related academic and practical knowledge and foster healthy social, emotional and language development. Thus, we can help a slow learner achieve success in life.
